da Vinci® Robotic Surgery
If you are considering surgery for a gynecologic problem, your physician may recommend da Vinci ® robotic surgery. The da Vinci™ Surgical System is a computer-based, minimally-invasive technology commonly referred to as robotic surgery. Brookwood Baptist Women’s Medical Center has become a leader in gynecologic robotic surgery nationwide. We use robotic surgery in the treatment of a number of gynecologic problems including pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, pre-cancerous conditions of the uterus and cervix, and ovarian cysts. Robotic surgery provides a minimally-invasive option for women who have had a previous Cesarean delivery or other abdominal surgery, endometriosis, or an enlarged uterus, who otherwise would require a large abdominal incision.
The physicians at Sparks & Favor feel that robotic surgery offers the possibility of less blood loss, less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stays, and a quicker return to your normal activities compared with traditional abdominal surgery.
Robotic Hysterectomy
For about 90% of our patients undergoing hysterectomy, we are pleased to be able to offer a minimally-invasive procedure, either vaginal or robotic hysterectomy. The robotic approach has made minimally-invasive hysterectomy available women for whom–due to enlargement of the uterus, prior pelvic surgery or other conditions–we would not recommend a vaginal procedure.
Robotic hysterectomy can offer potential benefits over traditional abdominal hysterectomy, including:
- Significantly less pain
- Less blood loss
- Fewer complications
- Less scarring
- A shorter hospital stay
- A faster return to normal daily activities
Robotic hysterectomy also allows your surgeon better visualization of anatomy. This means that surgeons have a distinct advantage when performing a hysterectomy involving adhesions (scarring from prior surgery or endometriosis).
The da Vinci® Surgical System
Robotic surgery overcomes some limitations of both traditional open surgery and conventional minimally-invasive surgery.
The da Vinci ® Surgical System provides the surgeon with the precision, dexterity, and control of traditional open surgery, while only requiring very small incisions, usually less than one-half inch.
The surgeon operates while seated comfortably, viewing a highly magnified 3D image of the body’s interior. To operate, the surgeon uses master controls that work like forceps. The system translates the surgeon’s hand, wrist and finger movements into precise movements of miniaturized instruments.
The System cannot be programmed, and it cannot make decisions on its own. The da Vinci System requires that every surgical maneuver be performed with direct input from your surgeon.
Safety
When considering surgical treatment options, many patients have concerns about safety. In particular, patients question whether da Vinci Surgery is as safe as traditional methods.
In fact, the da Vinci Surgical System has been used successfully in tens of thousands of minimally invasive procedures worldwide. In addition, da Vinci offers multiple, redundant safety features, which make the most effective, least invasive approach potentially as safe as traditional surgical methods.
The da Vinci System cannot be programmed, nor can it make decisions on its own. Instead, the system requires that every surgical maneuver be performed with direct input from your surgeon.
Because he or she controls the instruments while seated comfortably at the console, the surgeon will experience much less fatigue in performing surgery with the da Vinci System.
Also during the course of an operation, the da Vinci System will perform millions of safety self-checks. The System is designed to be fail-safe, which means that in the event of power interruption or a safety-check failure, the System is designed to shut down safely, allowing the surgeon to remain in control of the procedure.
While clinical studies support the effectiveness of the da Vinci Surgical System when used in minimally invasive surgery, individual results may vary. There are no guarantees of outcome. All surgeries involve the risk of major complications. Before you decide on surgery, discuss treatment options with your doctor. Understanding the risks of each treatment can help you make the best decision for your individual situation. Surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System may not be appropriate for every individual; it may not be applicable to your condition. Always ask your doctor about all treatment options, as well as their risks and benefits. Only your doctor can determine whether da Vinci Surgery is appropriate for your situation.
